Two memories of Michael
Created by Andrew one year ago
Sad to hear of Michael’s death; but what an extraordinary life, truly something to be celebrated! I have always been struck by his energy, his endless enthusiasm, his steadfast Christian faith, and his unshakeable confidence that all would be well, in any circumstances. There is abundant evidence of this in his captivating memoir “Through many toils and snares”.
Sometimes such moments could include a twinkle of humour. About 10 years ago, Maire and I went to visit him and Sylvia in Stody for a couple of days. One windy afternoon he took us for a drive to Cromer, on the coast. When we got to the town centre, we drove round looking for a parking place. None to be found... “Let’s drive round the block again,” said Michael. “I’m sure the Lord will provide.” So we did, and the Lord indeed did provide. He did not seem surprised; he just smiled.
Another memory illustrates another characteristic: his frugality. He and I once took a bus trip together from Faversham to Canterbury, to see the sights. Coming into the town, Michael gave a kind of running commentary on the pleasures in store. “So here we are, coming into Canterbury... its historic Cathedral... and how about a coffee before we explore?” We looked at café after café, and all were rejected as being too expensive, too posh. After what seemed a long walk, we found a suitable one eventually. He would not waste money.
Michael was a man of principle, but also of kindness, with an amazing inner strength. Yes, a life well lived.
With warm memories,
